Katie Van Slyke Makes the Heart-Wrenching Decision to Chop Kennedy’s Famous Red Mane — And There’s a Mysterious Reason She’ll Need Braids Again in Three Weeks
Katie Van Slyke knew some fans weren’t going to be happy.
Kennedy’s long, flowing, fire-red mane had become one of her most striking features — but with the NSBA World Show underway, Katie decided it was finally time for a dramatic change. Kennedy’s mane was getting chopped. Katie admitted the decision was difficult even for her, describing the process as heart-wrenching while watching those long locks disappear. But behind the dramatic haircut was a very specific show-ring reason.
Katie believes shortening Kennedy’s mane could help showcase one of the mare’s strongest physical features: her neck.
Why Katie Decided Kennedy’s Long Mane Had to Go
Katie is showing Kennedy in Western Pleasure, where the horse’s movement, performance and overall appearance are evaluated. And according to Katie, Kennedy has an especially beautiful neck. She has previously talked about Kennedy looking particularly good while traveling on her left lead.
Katie believes part of the reason may be simple: on that side, judges can better see Kennedy’s neck. On the opposite side, Kennedy’s long mane can visually cover part of it. Katie explained that the heavy mane can make Kennedy’s neck appear somewhat shorter or less balanced than it really is. As beautiful as the long mane was, Katie felt keeping it could prevent Kennedy from presenting her very best outline in the show ring.
“This Is the Big Leagues”
For Katie, the decision also came down to the level at which she and Kennedy are now competing. The NSBA World Show — along with events such as Congress — represents a different level of competition for the pair. Katie reflected on the amount of work, time, money and preparation that goes into competing at this level.
Because of that investment, she didn’t want to enter the ring feeling like she had only committed halfway. If shortening Kennedy’s mane could improve her presentation, Katie felt they needed to go all in. Even if it hurt a little.
Katie Refused to Make the Big Cut Herself
There was another important decision: Katie wasn’t touching those scissors herself. With such a dramatic change, she was nervous about accidentally cutting Kennedy’s mane too short or creating an uneven result. Instead, she waited for professional bander Miss Julie.
Julie began by placing bands through Kennedy’s mane, helping establish the appropriate length before cleaning everything up. Katie joked that allowing the professional to handle the job would also save her from the inevitable “bowl cut” comments if she tried doing it herself. Considering how attached fans are to Kennedy’s mane, Katie wasn’t taking any chances.
Kennedy Was Getting the Full Show-Horse Treatment
The mane transformation wasn’t the only preparation underway. Kennedy had already been ridden and spent the morning being ponied by Miss Ethel. She was also receiving PEMF treatment while getting ready for the days ahead.
Everything around Kennedy’s preparation reflected how seriously Katie and her team are approaching the show. And then the scissors came out.
Katie’s Reaction to Holding Kennedy’s Mane Was Priceless
Knowing the haircut was necessary didn’t make watching it happen any easier. As large sections of Kennedy’s mane came off, Katie couldn’t hide her reaction. The new length looked dramatically shorter.
At one point, Katie found herself physically holding Kennedy’s removed mane and wondering what she was supposed to do with it. Keep it? Turn it into bracelets? Auction pieces? She even joked about making a forelock extension from it.
The comments were funny, but Katie’s attachment to Kennedy’s famous mane was obvious. She couldn’t quite believe she was standing there holding it in her hands.
But Kennedy’s Neck Suddenly Had the Spotlight
Once Julie completed the banding and cleanup, the reason behind the decision became much easier to see. With the long mane no longer covering her neck, Kennedy’s outline was far more visible. Katie felt the shorter style highlighted the mare’s neck beautifully.
Kennedy would wear a slinky overnight to help keep everything smooth, flat and show-ready. And Katie joked that Kennedy was once again looking like VS The First Lady rather than “Kenneth.” The dramatic transformation was complete.
But Why Does Kennedy Need Braids in Three Weeks?
There was one particularly interesting detail hidden inside Katie’s update. Kennedy apparently needs to wear braids in approximately three weeks. Usually, that would be easier with a slightly longer mane.
Katie acknowledged the issue, but Julie assured her she could make the shorter mane work when the time comes. Then Katie deliberately refused to explain why Kennedy will need those braids. Her message was essentially simple: Don’t worry about why yet. You’ll see in three weeks.
That leaves fans with a new mystery to follow even after the NSBA World Show. Whatever Katie has planned will apparently require Kennedy to appear with braids — and for now, she’s keeping the reason secret.
Was Cutting Kennedy’s Mane the Right Decision?
Katie already knows fans are going to have mixed feelings. Some will miss Kennedy’s long red locks. Others may love how clearly the shorter mane shows off her neck.
But from Katie’s perspective, competing on one of their biggest stages meant fully committing to whatever could help Kennedy look her best. The long mane will eventually grow again.
