Another Tiny Face Appears—and Katie’s Calf Count Hits 22!

A New Little Face in the Pasture: Katie’s Daily Calf Count Reaches 22

Katie began her daily calf count knowing there was already a surprise waiting for her.

The total had stood at 21 the day before. But while unloading after a cattle sale, she had spotted something in the pasture that had not been there previously.

A new baby had arrived.

Before getting a closer look, Katie set out to count the calves already scattered across the farm. What followed was a cheerful round of familiar faces, mistaken identities, a little milk-stealing, and one particularly adorable newcomer.

By the end of the visit, the total was official: 22 calves.

So much for the quiet stretch in calving season Katie had imagined.

She started in the pasture where the mothers who had already delivered were staying with their babies. There should have been 13 calves there, but finding and identifying everyone took some attention.

The little ones were spread out, making Katie work for her count.

First came the calf Pinky, followed by the unmistakably named Poopy Head and Floppy Pocket. Panini was nearby, while another baby required a second look.

Was that Potato?

No—Pancake.

Katie corrected herself and continued.

With so many calves to recognize, the count became as much a test of identification as arithmetic. Sometimes a face or marking helped. Sometimes Katie looked at the mother beside a calf for a clue.

That method seemed sensible until one youngster complicated things.

Katie saw a baby nursing from Milk and assumed it was Pint, Milk’s own calf.

A little later, she spotted Pint somewhere else.

That left an obvious question: who had been helping themselves to his mother’s milk?

Pretzel.

“That ain’t your mama,” Katie told the little opportunist.

It was the kind of discovery that turned an ordinary head count into an entertaining update. While Katie was trying to keep everyone straight, the calves were going about their day with little regard for how confusing they made it.

She corrected the names in her count and carried on, spotting Parton, Pepper Jack, Pistachio, and eventually Potato.

By the time she had finished that pasture, she had accounted for the expected 13.

Now she could investigate the new arrival.

Katie moved into the neighboring pasture, where she had noticed the unfamiliar baby earlier. There, beside Gianna, was a calf with a striking white face.

Gianna is one of Gigi’s daughters, giving followers another connection to a familiar family.

But in that moment, Katie’s attention was firmly on the tiny newcomer.

“Oh, wow,” she said, encouraging the calf to turn its head.

She wanted everyone to see that beautiful face properly.

After checking off so many familiar names, here was a baby she had yet to learn anything about. Its markings were immediately eye-catching, but another important detail remained uncertain.

Was Gianna’s baby a heifer or a bull?

Katie tried to get a better view, talking to the calf as though it might kindly turn around and answer the question for her.

She sounded hopeful that it could be a little heifer. However, the clip did not provide a clear confirmation, so that detail was still something to discover.

What she could confirm was its place in the count.

The new calf became number 14 on her rounds.

Katie lingered to admire it before reminding herself that she still had other babies to check.

There were three more calves in that pasture to find. She spotted Patsy, another little girl whose name had not yet been decided, and Luna’s baby boy enjoying a meal.

For the unnamed girl, Katie said she was leaning toward Piglet.

It was still a possibility rather than a final announcement, but another memorable name might soon be joining the herd.

That brought the count to 17 calves outside so far. Adding the little boy being kept in the barn brought it to 18.

One pasture remained.

Katie expected to find four calves with the heifers. If there were five, she explained, that would mean another new arrival.

At first, only three were easy to spot.

Then she located the little red boy, joking that he was being excluded from the gathering.

Priscilla, Persephone, Poem, and Picasso were all accounted for.

The final total was 22.

For Katie, the result put an end to her imagined lull in calving. Another baby had arrived, and the daily rounds had brought another face to admire, another identity to establish, and another little story for followers to watch unfold.

The count also showed how much life was happening across the pastures.

There was Pretzel borrowing a meal, Luna’s son finding his own snack, familiar youngsters spending time together, and Gianna’s new baby waiting to be properly introduced.

Twenty-two calves meant plenty of names to remember—and Katie was already looking forward to hearing which ones had captured everyone’s attention.

Who is your favorite so far—and has Gianna’s beautiful white-faced baby just joined your list?
