Bella’s Triplets Step on the Scale—and the “Big Brother” Gets a Surprise

Katie thought she had a pretty good idea which of Bella’s babies would weigh the most.

The firstborn boy looked chunky. His younger brother was tall but seemed a little slimmer. Their tiny sister appeared noticeably smaller than both.

Then came the scale—and another reminder that appearances can be misleading.

With plenty of cuddles, a few baby kisses, and some wonderfully inaccurate guesses, Katie set out to weigh Bella’s triplets. The results gave everyone a new detail to learn about the little family.

The first volunteer was baby boy number two, who had been the last of the three to arrive.

“Excuse me, tiny sir,” Katie began. “I would like to know how much you weigh.”

Her little subject already seemed interested in climbing, but that adventure would have to wait. Before he could get back to exploring, Katie needed a moment of cooperation.

She joked with Bella about borrowing her son, then gathered him up for his turn in the weighing bag.

This boy had been outside with his mother while his siblings were tucked away elsewhere. He was tall, Katie noted, but she did not think he looked as chunky as the firstborn.

Her guess was three and a half pounds.

Katie immediately admitted that weight predictions were not her greatest strength. She was often wrong, she said—and sometimes by quite a margin.

The baby made the guessing game especially pleasant by licking her.

“I’m getting lots of kisses right now, and I love it,” she said.

Then they checked the reading.

Four pounds, three ounces.

He was heavier than Katie had expected.

She noted that the scale had been zeroed, although she also expressed some doubt about its reliability, joking about their poor luck with scales. The figures in this update were the readings they obtained that day, rather than confirmed birth weights.

Even with that caveat, the first result had already challenged her expectations.

Next came the firstborn boy.

Katie described him as the chunky one and expected him to be a little heavier than his brother. He had also been trying to nurse before his turn, giving her another variable to consider as she made her prediction.

Would the boy who looked bigger take the top spot?

The scale read four pounds exactly.

Katie was surprised.

At this weigh-in, the firstborn was three ounces lighter than his younger brother.

He was still the older brother, of course, but the title of heaviest boy belonged to the baby who had arrived last.

Katie wondered whether their recent feeding might account for some of the difference. The younger boy had been with Bella and could have had a fuller belly. She did not settle on a definite explanation.

Instead, she paused for another cuddle.

“I just have to snuggle,” she said.

The weighing session might have had a practical purpose, but holding Bella’s babies was clearly a welcome part of the job.

Then it was time for their sister.

Katie introduced her as the “little tiny princess,” a description that suited the mostly black baby girl who had already captured so much attention.

Compared with her brothers, she looked especially small in Katie’s arms.

This time, Katie guessed three pounds.

Once again, the scale had a different answer.

Three pounds, eight ounces.

The little girl was still the lightest, but she was closer to her brothers than Katie had imagined. The reading put her half a pound below the firstborn boy and eleven ounces below the younger boy.

Together, the three displayed weights added up to 11 pounds, 11 ounces—nearly twelve pounds of baby goats for Katie to cuddle, weigh, and keep track of.

The total prompted Katie to reflect on how large Bella had looked toward the end of her pregnancy. Seeing the three babies individually gave everyone a new appreciation for the mother who had carried them.

Their current weights could not establish exactly what each had weighed at birth, but they made an impression all the same.

For followers who had spent weeks guessing whether Bella would have three babies or four, there was now another set of predictions to compare.

Who had guessed the lastborn boy would be the heaviest? Who had put the little girl closer to three and a half pounds? And who, like Katie, had expected the firstborn to top the list?

The update ended with more to look forward to as the triplets grew, played, and began showing their personalities.

For now, the session had delivered three scale readings, an unexpected result, and plenty of affection.

Bella’s babies were already proving that even a simple weigh-in could become a story worth sharing.

Did you guess correctly? Which surprised you most: 4 lb 3 oz for the youngest boy, 4 lb for the firstborn, or 3 lb 8 oz for their little sister?
